Alexander R Adams, voice teacher

About Me

My name is Alexander Adams. I teach a general healthy singing technique, supported by current vocal science and pedagogy practices, to students of all skill levels, ages 12 and up.

I received my Masters degree in Music Performance from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music where I was trained in opera theater, choral music, and vocal pedagogy.

I am a registered member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS).

With over a decade of professional performance experience and 8 years of teaching students of all skill levels and backgrounds, I am confident we can turn your voice into something you are proud of.

I can also teach lessons in beginner piano, electric bass, composition/songwriting, music theory, stage acting and voice acting.

How we learn to sing

I work with new students to establish proper breath support, healthy vocalization and resonance for a solid foundation that will make singing in a variety of styles comfortable and easy. With these new habits, you will find your range increasing, your breath lasting longer, and your voice sounding richer and louder.

What I Teach:

  • Efficient breathing habits for balanced, healthy phonation
  • Matching pitch and how intonation relates to vowel resonance
  • Language and how consonants and diphthongs affect singing
  • Lyric diction in English, Latin, Italian, German and French
  • Functional legato phrasing, the smooth connection between notes
  • Singing with dynamics, loud, quiet and in-between
  • Reading sheet music, solfege and sight-singing skills
  • Differences in singing with an ensemble, solo, with/without a microphone
  • Vocal anatomy, how the voice works and vocal health
  • Voice types, selecting appropriate repertoire and choosing keys
  • Composing, songwriting forms and lyric writing
  • Music theory including chords, scales and functional harmony
  • Stage presence and acting for singing, addressing stage fright/anxiety
  • Productive practice habits and techniques

I have worked with students singing a wide variety of musical genres, including:

choral music, musical theater, jazz, opera, art song, pop, bluegrass, country, rock, blues, metal, grunge, alternative, and more.

Why I Teach Singing

Being trained in singing boosted my self-confidence and taught me how to be more expressive with my voice. Musical training in general has increased my focus and discipline by way of detail-oriented practice. More than anything else I love to lead others down the same path and show them all the exciting possibilities that music can offer. From complete beginners for whom music is just a hobby to advanced students preparing for auditions and performances, I can offer guidance every step of the way.

Reviews from students

Whenever I look for an instructor my requirements include someone who has achieved mastery in their field and is a brilliant teacher. Alex definitely fits that criteria and has such a deep and fundamental grasp of singing and music that he is able to almost instantly diagnose issues and immediately suggest universally applicable solutions. This makes for extremely efficient lessons and, I have progressed faster in the year since I started taking voice lessons with him (as a brand new singer) than I thought possible. You cannot go wrong with Alex.

I had never taken voice lessons before starting with Alexander. Right from the first lesson, Alexander created a fun and welcoming learning environment. He is patient and explains both theory and technique clearly. He has an excellent ear for hearing the nuances in the voice and gives feedback and instruction on how to make improvements. Since starting voice lessons with Adams-Voice Studio, I can hear a vast improvement in my singing voice. I have more power behind my voice and my tonal range is increasing. I would recommend Adams-Voice Studio to anyone of any age looking to improve their singing or speaking voice. Thanks, Alex!

I've totally enjoyed working with Alexander! He's helped me find a level of control and ease with my voice that I didn't know was available for a beginner like myself. I've referred other people to him and they've all felt the same way. Highly recommended!
- Gwenn C.

Very helpful lessons; I have really improved my range and the types of songs I can sing since taking these lessons.

I've been singing for 15 years, and semi-professionally for the past five years. In five months of working with Alex, he has retooled my vocal technique and fundamentally changed my approach to singing for the better. It's been incredible to hear and feel the difference as I work through new and old material applying what I learn from our lessons. My singing is clearer, brighter, and requires less effort. People who have been hearing me sing for years have all noticed the difference as well. I'm excited to continue working with him, to continue my growth and development as a vocalist and to apply all this to my art on stage and in studio.

I worked with Alex for a little more than 7 months and I would highly recommend him as a voice teacher for a beginner student. I was interested in trying something new, something I had never done before, and something which was "just for fun" and "just for me." I decided to give singing lessons a try, despite (or perhaps because of) identifying as a terrible singer. I chose Alex as a teacher and I'm so glad I did. I quickly realized that much of what I thought was my own inherent "bad singing" was just bad technique/no technique. I had never learned many of the technical aspects of singing before. Alex helped me learn many of these techniques (that I didn't even know existed), along with notes, transitions, timing, projection, and even a bit of sight-reading. (His teaching favors "bel canto" though he's knowledgeable about a range of styles.)

I have been working with Alex for a couple of years now to keep my aging voice working. Alex has been very patient and creative in finding ways to help me lose the poor singing habits I've developed over decades of singing and replace them with a healthier, stronger voice.
- Josh E.

Very happy with his work quality, professionalism, responsiveness, value, and punctuality.
- Michele C.

I've been taking lessons for a few months. Learning a lot each time. Alex has substantial knowledge. My singing and confidence in my voice have greatly improved.
- Larry W.

I've been taking voice lessons with Alex:- He's very well versed with music and the application of theory (from my perspective)- His passion for teaching is definitely instrumental.- He's friendly and easy to get along with, he really tunes into your needs as a student.

Alex is the exact kind of instructor I’ve been searching for for years. After a throat injury years ago, I was unsure and worried about hurting my voice again, but from the moment of my first lesson with Alex to now, I have never felt so safe and at ease. My throat strain has definitely decreased, and I expect it to go away completely as I improve. Lessons are well-balanced with technique, gentle and honest feedback, and fun! I never feel things are rushed, yet somehow learn a wealth of information. I find myself free to laugh as we work and not take anything too seriously, yet am highly motivated to do my due diligence practicing at home. Alex himself has an incredible voice that proves he himself is an artist in what he teaches. It is a joy learning from him!

Alexander was recommended to me by a good friend about three months ago. My granddaughter is autistic and loves to sing. Alex is so good with her and very patient, He always commends her when she has done well and she is always excited to go to her lesson. I would highly recommend Alex to anyone looking for voice lessons. The studio is a great setting and very professional!
- Patty V.
